"What's wrong Brandon?" asked his friend and fellow employee, Bryan. "You're acting really strange." "I just can't do this," said Brandon. He was still talking to his friend as he walked down the hallway back to the corporate headquarters. "I'm going to go talk to my boss." Brandon knocked on the CEO's door and waited for an answer. Finally, he said, "Come in." The door opened and Brandon found himself face-to-face with the CEO of his company, a man named Kenneth. Kenneth was a handsome man who Brandon had always thought was very charismatic. He seemed like a very powerful person who could make things happen. "What are you doing here?" asked Kenneth. "I thought you had quit." "What are you talking about?" said Brandon. "You know very well that I haven't gone anywhere. What's going on?" "It's too bad that we don't have any other employees we can let go," said Kenneth, sighing and looking up at the ceiling as he spoke. "But it is what it is and we need to make cuts like this all the time." Brandon felt like an idiot for asking questions to a man who was obviously too busy to deal with him anyway. He stood there for a second, not sure what to do next. "I'm sorry you can't stay," said Kenneth. "You're one of the best employees we've got and we need to do what we can to keep you around." He pointed at Brandon and said, "You should be proud. You've made a difference here, and it's probably one of the best things you've ever done." Then he walked away from Brandon and closed the door behind him. "What was that all about?" asked Bryan as they walked back down the hallway together after their encounter with Kenneth. "I didn't understand what he was saying." "Hey, don't worry about it," said Brandon. "I think I actually just made my break. I'm not going back to work-life again." "Back to work-life?" asked Bryan. "What are you talking about? You've been jobless for months." "No," said Brandon, shaking his head. "I never quit my job.
